40th Annual Kinetic Grand Championship-One of the Wackiest Events in Humboldt County CA

You know summer is around the corner when the Kinetic Grand Championship kicks off at the Arcata Plaza at High Noon on Saturday, Memorial Day Weekend.  There were between 8,000 to 10,000 spectators waiting to cheer their favorite Kinetic Sculpture teams on.  This is a 3-day race through an insane race course that started at the Arcata Plaza and ends in downtown Ferndale.  Today racers are on their way to the finish line in Ferndale, California as I write this post.

So for those of you who know nothing about the Kinetic Grand Championship (originally named the Kinetic Sculpture Race – long story about why the name was changed, might include that in a different blog down the road) – it’s a race that combines artistic creativity with engineering genius – People Powered sculptures all competing “For the Glory” though a wild race course throughout Humboldt County.  Racer’s not only must survive windy conditions, but must be able to get down Deadman’s Drop (steep dune path to the beach) and they’re people powered sculptures must be able to float (in Humboldt Bay).   Each participating racer(s) has a whole entourage to help them get through the race and each group dresses up to fit the theme of the racer’s Kinetic Sculpture.

The 40th annual Kinetic Grand Championship is one of many events/festivals here in Humboldt County, California and if participating makes you a little quezy – than being a spectator is nothing to sneeze at.

Warning! This is a wacky event where bribes are encouraged and the last man powered sculpture to arrive at the finish line gets an award!

Visit the Kinetic Grand Championship website for the history and details of this crazy and funfilled event.

Check out the Kinetic Website for Live streaming of this whole event or check out KHUM radio for great photos, blogs, live coverage and more!

Below are some photos of the beginning of the race this past Saturday at the Arcata Plaza:

Show’s Over – Spectators head over to the Manila Community Center to watch the Kinetic Sculptures and their crew brave Deadman’s Drop – one of the steepest dune paths down to the pacific coast.
